Audio Books - as Productivity Enhancer

In early Aug 2012 I took the 9 Things Successful People do Differently test (quite a few areas for improvement :) ) and since then have been wanting to read the book by the same name. However I did not want this book to make its way into my wishlist of books to be read. So was scouting for an option that would fit into my schedule. To my surprise, when browsing through Amazon I find a free audible version of the book.  After a effortless signup on Audible.com,  installation of the Audible App and download of the book on my iPhone - am ready to get started. I've heard nearly 50% of the book on my way to work and I expect to complete it on my way home. The audible option could turn out to be a workable option for getting through some of the publications on my to-read list.

An audible has been a productivity enhancer, put simply it helps me make better use of my commute time through Bangalore's infamous traffic. The user experience through the subscription process, adding to wishlist, working with  the cart, and the non-spam notifications is a pleasure. The audio quality rocks and bookmarks feature enables me to mark notable sections.
However, listening to an audible requires your mind to focus on what you are listening to and that becomes quite a challenge when your eyes chance upon something that draws your attention or your mind wanders off on some random thought. Whats worked for me is sitting at the back of a cab, listening more and focusing less on what I'm seeing. I think listening to serious material when driving yourself could be a risk.

As far as enhancing the user experience goes, Audible.com could do well to enhance the following features of an audible:
1. Replace "Chapter 1" etc with the actual name of the chapter. This will make it easier to recognize chapters for their content.
2. Add the equivalent of an index in non-fiction audibles. Enables the listener to jump to related content.
3. Include the ubiquitous search feature to look for specific sections
4. Enable subscriptions in INR to save the exchange charges :)

I'd say…
  • Go for audio books if you are stretched for time to read and would like to make the most of the commute to work or when you find yourself in a waiting room.
  • You need a device (Kindle, Apple, or Android) - a credit card, Internet connection while downloading.
  • Check the exchange rates if paying in INR.
  • However, watch out for your mind wandering off as you are listening.
  • Be aware if you are the one driving
Go ahead ….. Enjoy listening to your book.
