Be what you want to be

My career has transitioned from Trainer to Curriculum Developer to Technical Writer to Program Manager to Agile Coach to Product Owner. How it happened, a possible alignment of the stars *grin* but I would put it down to taking a chance. Some of us are lucky to have a mentor to guide us along the way, or role models to inspire the moves we make, but in my case it has been a mental state of dissatisfaction that has proved introspective.
So this post is about dwelling on that niggling discontent with the current circumstances. What I have learned to do is after the initial stage of cribbing and delving into self-pity and blaming everyone else for my miserable situation, I stumble upon the glimmer of hope. Then I build on it and work on it until it works itself into a situation which I am happy about.
While documenting the release features, I found myself reviewing them and providing feedback; no rocket science this, but just by keeping at this behavior I realized that I wanted to do more in the scheme of a project. So when the offer to step in for a Program Manager came around in 2007, I jumped at it and its been a whirlwind ride ever since.
My learnings
1) Be aware of my current state-of-mind
2) Be alert to opportunities that show themselves often in quiet ways
3) Seize the moment
4) Establish yourself
